New Student Orientation contacted me with a need to update their online orientation for transfer & non-traditional students. Before, the site had only been editable in IE6. As this posed a security risk to them in addition to making their site look extremely outdated, they asked for a solution that would be easy to edit, but still maintain the functionality of their previous site (most importantly tracking progress through the orientation).
I transferred the content of their old website to the University's CMS system, having to alter the standard University template with some considerable coding to program the tracking throughout the orientation. Progress is shown on the left navigation (green indicating a completed section) and a progress bar at the top of the site. In addition, I added a few personalization elements to the orientation not available in the previous version (e.g. a greeting to the user with their first name). These elements were not needed, but I felt it gave the orientation a more personal feeling.
On the back end, the progress is updated every time the student clicks to the next section of the orientation. When the orientation is completed, the database is updated with the current date (i.e. when the student finished) and a query is run to pull all records with a non-NULL completion date and the hold on their account is removed.
